Wood County, West Virginia
Burgess & Niple (B&N) was retained by the Wood County Airport Authority to prepare plans and specifications for repair of a landslide which occurred adjacent to Taxiway H. The length of the landslide was approximately 500 feet with a maximum height of 60 feet. The location of the landslide required the temporary closing of Taxiway H due to the close proximity of the head of the landslide to the Taxiway pavement.
B&N established topographic survey and subsurface investigation requirements for the project including the drilling of 16 test borings to investigate the slide and potential borrow sources. One challengomg aspect of the project was to formulate a repair which would not cause further damage and loss of service to the taxiway. After performing an in-depth slope stability analysis using the computer program PCSTABL, B&N designed a buttress fill with an extensive subsurface drainage system to remediate the landslide.
