Hunting and shooting sports enthusiasts in Delaware, Ohio, have a newly upgraded place to hone their archery and firearm skills. Working with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife, B&N led the remediation of the original range and design of a new shooting range at the Delaware Wildlife Area, just north of Columbus.

The reconstruction and expansion project, located on approximately 10 acres, replaced the existing shooting range that was susceptible to frequent flooding and the existing archery range, which was subject to vandalism. Both ranges were too small to support local interest and lacked restrooms and permanent buildings for maintenance and operations staff.

B&N provided design and environmental remediation services, including:

  • Demolition and remediation of the existing site, including removal of bullet and shell fragments
  • Preparation of NEPA documents including wetland delineations, an Indiana bat habitat assessment and cultural resource investigations
  • Architectural, structural, electrical and civil engineering design services for new facilities for the site

The new range is ODNR’s largest public shooting range. The new facilities have been located to alleviate the flooding issues, provide improved bullet containment and are fully ADA compliant. Features include:

  • Shooting range with five clay target hand trap fields for shotguns
  • Archery facility with a 3D walkthrough course
  • Indoor education and training facility with restrooms and meeting space
  • Standing outdoor archery range
  • Elevated archery platform
  • Rifle, pistol and shotgun ranges with bullet containment backstops and baffles
  • Sitewide security system with alarms and video surveillance
  • Parking facilities
  • Range master building
