Washington Boulevard runs for approximately 3,000 feet between North Frederick and North Kensington Streets in a high-density urban area. The roadway sat between curb and gutter on one side and ditch line on the other.
Burgess & Niple completed surveys, above- and below-ground utility locations, including fiber optics, and engineering design to provide a complete, uniform street width with a minimum of 14-foot-wide travel lanes. Additional design elements included curb and gutter, a parking lane, utility relocation, and a grass strip and sidewalk to conform to existing conditions and to meet neighborhood expectations.
One of the primary engineering challenges associated with this roadway improvement project was to match grades at existing sidewalks, driveways, and intersections and minimize impacts on adjacent residential properties. Pavement milling, saw cutting, and overlay limits shown on the plan clearly defined transitions from old to new pavements and provided a valuable construction tool.
