City of St. Clairsville
St. Clairsville, Ohio
Burgess & Niple (B&N) assisted St. Clairsville in converting part of an abandoned Wheeling & Lake Erie RR line into a bicycle path. The bicycle path runs beneath U.S. Rt. 40 through an abandoned railroad tunnel and becomes part of the National Road bikeway. The tunnel was built in 1902, is about 530 feet long, and lies 60 feet below U.S. Rt. 40.
B&N’s safety evaluation involved:
B&N designed the new headwall and rock bolting and oversaw construction of the tunnel repairs. This unique biking and walking tunnel in the heart of St. Clairsville features new lighting, a staircase to U.S. Rt. 40 above, and a rooftop plaza with park benches.
