Six steel through-truss bridges and their structural steel approach spans were inspected at arm’s length. The bridges in this project included:
A six-person team used Burgess & Niple’s climbing techniques combined with mechanical access equipment to inspect the truss members and substructure units. Confined-space inspections were performed in the steel box pier caps in the Kentucky approach of the Brent Spence. Hand-held computers were used in the inspection to automate note-taking, and were combined into a final digital database that was delivered with the paper reports. Kentucky short-form reports, schematic drawings of fracture-critical member locations and numbering, and TC71-118 forms were prepared. The reports included deficiencies, photographs, and maintenance/repair recommendations.
