Burgess & Niple prepared plans and specifications to convert the Lake County Aquarius Water Treatment Plant - a conventional filtration plant - from a chlorine gas disinfection system to a liquid sodium hypochlorite system. The conversion was made to promote a safer disinfection process. The new system consists of a spill containment area with “bridge” type platforms for both bulk and daily use storage of the sodium along with a system of feed pumps used to disperse the sodium into the drinking water at different stages of the treatment process.
Elevated bridge platforms were used instead of solid concrete pads. The elevated platforms take advantage of gravity allowing the bulk tanks to feed directly to the day tank. Utilizing this arrangement, the volume under the tanks can be utilized for spill containment, which decreases the overall footprint of the facility.
