Revitalization of an Ohio River Suspension Bridge

Two counties – Brooke County, West Virginia and Jefferson County, Ohio – were at risk of losing a critical transportation link due to aging infrastructure and limited funding. The Market Street Bridge that connects the two counties and spans the Ohio River was facing closure with an overall bridge rating of “poor” and a reduced load rating. With funding constraints and the prospect of a new bridge years away, community leaders asked the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) to consider options that would extend the life of the deteriorating, century-old span until a new river crossing could be constructed.

WVDOT looked to B&N for their combined bridge inspection and award-winning bridge design expertise to quickly identify and design critical repairs to rehabilitate the Market Street Bridge. In this technical paper, the B&N and WVDOT project team outlines the award-winning Market Street Bridge rehabilitation project.
