CASE STUDY: State Route 7 Emergency Bridge Repairs During Design
In INDOT’s Seymour District in Southern Indiana, two State Route 7 bridge projects suffered failures while designs to replace the bridges were underway. In both cases, emergency temporary repairs were required.
Presenters Jeff Drake, PE from Burgess & Niple and Bill Read, PE from INDOT will discuss how practical design methods were used to identify ways to reduce costs. Some examples include: re-using beams from the emergency repairs, widening the structure to eliminate a run-around bridge, changing beam types, re-using existing footings, and shoulder width reduction.
Jeff and Bill also will talk about the schedule adjustments and flexible design approach that allowed them to incorporate repairs in a way that minimized re-work.
