Burgess & Niple (B&N) delivered design services for the $2.7 million roundabout improvement project at the intersection of US 6 and US 421 in LaPorte County. Completed in September 2024, the new roundabout improves safety by reducing crash frequency and severity while relieving congestion and enhancing traffic flow for motorists and commercial vehicles alike.

A full closure of the intersection allowed the contractor to complete construction efficiently and deliver a smooth, high-quality pavement surface. Designed to accommodate heavy truck traffic, the roundabout features a 10-inch-thick Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) truck apron and a Geocell Confinement System along the perimeter to create a dense, stable surface for oversized loads. The project also included hot mix asphalt (HMA) paving for the mainline and transition areas.

Strong coordination contributed to the project’s success. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement provided a safe and well-managed work zone throughout construction, while B&N worked closely with the INDOT LaPorte District Railroad Coordinator to expedite SR 39 railroad crossing improvements, completing them two weeks ahead of schedule.
