When the City of Wooster sought to upgrade aging traffic signal infrastructure and meet requirements tied to transportation grant funding, B&N was engaged to provide comprehensive traffic engineering services. The city needed timely evaluations, modernized signal designs and verification of intersections included in Safe Routes to School improvements.
B&N completed four traffic signal warrant studies, including two studies required to verify Safe Routes to School that related to upgrades at Oak Hill Road and Highland Road and at Portage Road and Melrose Road. These studies confirmed that the intersections met national warrant criteria, an essential condition for using the awarded grant funds.
The intersection of Liberty Street and Walnut Street required full signal replacement due to deteriorating equipment. Located in a highly urbanized area with decorative brick pavers, the project called for careful construction planning to minimize community disruption.
B&N also designed upgrades at State Route 83 and Friendsville Road and at Millersburg Road and Madison Avenue, converting aging span-wire signals to mast arm systems for improved reliability and visibility.
B&N incorporated several modern features across the city's signal improvements, including:
