B&N was a sub-consultant to Brown & Caldwell, Inc. for this progressive design-build project. Key project features included:

  • Nondestructive inspection and assessment of the sewers (pipe and access structures) utilizing NASSCO standards.
  • Development of a rehab and renewal plan in coordination with MSD and its representatives to reduce failure risk and maximize the life of sewers.
  • Implementation of the rehab and renewal plan, including design and construction.

These activities were applied to four separate areas: the Broadway area, the Grinstead Drive area, the Rudd Avenue area and the Western Outfall area. B&N is the lead design engineer for the Rudd Sewer area.

B&N led the condition assessment, rehab recommendations and repair prioritization for the Rudd Sewer area, which is over 4,700 linear feet of combined sewer that connects to two flood pump stations. The sewer is a 120-inch to 132-inch brick sewer originally constructed in the 1870s. During this project, 16 pipe reaches were inspected using CCTV and multi-sensor inspection. B&N performed the condition assessment of the inspected sewers and manholes by reviewing the inspection videos and reports. The assessment identified structural and operational deficiencies. B&N collaborated with MSD's modeler to assess the hydraulic feasibility of various rehabilitation options. Rehabilitation techniques included sliplining, shotcrete with reinforcement, spot repairs, lateral lining and manhole rehabilitation.

B&N worked with the permitting team on an extensive permitting effort. The rehab area crosses the levee twice: the railroad and Interstate 64. For the interstate crossing, B&N quickly secured record drawings through ongoing statewide bridge work to analyze the construction of the bridge piers and the feasibility of opening a slip-lining shaft under Interstate 64. The project team collaborated with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 and the Federal Highway Department throughout the permitting process. B&N provided design services during the construction of this project.
