When the city of Solon, Ohio, faced recurring roadway overtopping and aging culverts along Briar Hill Drive, the sole access point for a large subdivision, B&N was engaged to design a safe, resilient replacement that could be constructed within tight physical, utility and scheduling constraints.
The existing dual 38-inch by 57-inch corrugated metal elliptical culverts conveyed the subdivision’s primary stream into its recreational lake but were undersized and deteriorating. B&N evaluated alternatives and designed a 17-foot 6-inch slab bridge supported by soldier pile abutments to improve hydraulic performance, address poor soil conditions and raise the roadway profile to eliminate overtopping. Due to site constraints, three- and four-sided precast units were deemed not feasible without closing the roadway.
B&N worked closely with city staff throughout design to confirm priorities, maintain access expectations and align construction sequencing with community needs. Utility coordination was extensive, including temporary relocations of electric, phone and cable services to prevent service disruptions and avoid construction delays.
This project, constructed in 2021, provides a safer and more reliable single access point for residents. The new structure reduces flooding risk, supports long-term maintenance needs and improves stormwater conveyance in the recreational lake.
