With limited space and growing congestion, many agencies are turning to Active Traffic Management (ATM) strategies. This workshop features hands-on exercises applying ATM solutions to congested corridors. Participants will evaluate strategies, report findings and identify research needs for optimizing infrastructure use without costly expansions. Case-based learning will facilitate discussion and innovation.
This session will introduce the Safe System Approach and explore how it can be applied in a typical fatal crash review, or crash investigation process, and shift the focus to systemic solutions that can prevent future tragedies. In this interactive session, attendees will engage in a mock fatal crash investigation, using the principles of the Safe System Approach to analyze the causes of the crash and explore strategies for prevention. By working through the crash scenario, participants will gain practical insights into how systemic factors—such as road design, vehicle safety and human behavior—contribute to crashes and what changes can be made to reduce future risk.
The Safe System Approach (SSA) is widely recognized, but many agencies still lack clear implementation guidance. This workshop delves into the integration of SSA principles and practices across all stages of the project lifecycle, including planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance. While focused on state DOTs, the workshop offers methods applicable to local agencies working to achieve zero deaths and serious injuries.
