Roundabouts are proven to reduce crashes and fatalities, yet rapid implementation and community acceptance can be challenging. This presentation highlights Kentucky’s approach to low-impact, quick-construction roundabouts through three recent projects.

In Montgomery County, a roundabout was designed and built in 18 months at a high-crash intersection. Despite initial skepticism, the community embraced the project after it led to a significant drop in crashes and zero injuries in its first year. In Scott County, two roundabout alternatives are being evaluated for a complex offset intersection, balancing safety improvements with minimal impact to local properties. In Woodford County, roundabout designs were optimized to stay within existing pavement, reducing costs and speeding up delivery.

These case studies demonstrate how rapid design, innovative geometry and community engagement can deliver safer intersections with minimal disruption. Attendees will learn practical strategies for implementing roundabouts quickly and effectively.

The KY 121 Bypass was envisioned to be a four-lane bypass carrying cars, trucks and farm implements around Mayfield, Kentucky. Initially constructed as a two-lane bypass, additional right-of-way was built for the “future widening” of this road.

This presentation highlights how, through early analysis, stakeholder coordination and a willingness to think outside the box, the team is bringing a safer roadway to Mayfield for all users. Traffic analysis and safety analysis utilized early in the design alternatives phase allowed the team to show project sponsors, local officials and the public how more lanes aren’t always the answer and that innovative intersections and multimodal connectivity are possible even in a rural setting.

Attendees will learn strategies for how to evaluate different alternatives, think outside the box and work with local stakeholders to drive forth innovation and change.
