This presentation will tell the story of the collaborative effort between B&N and the Jackson County Roads Department to design and rebuild the Fredenburg Road Bridge after it had been burned beyond repair. Starting with the post-fire inspection and ending with the final construction punch list, we will discuss how the key decisions were made, how the construction challenges were addressed and how the project timeline was met, from both a structural engineering and owner/construction management/builders’ perspective.
Fredenburg Road in Jackson County, Oregon, is a rural gravel road that services multiple residences and a few thousand acres of timberland. In October 2024, just months after it had been resurfaced, the single-span glue-laminated timber girder and timber-deck bridge over the North Fork of Big Butte Creek was set on fire and burned beyond repair. The fire marshal declared the incident an act of arson. Jackson County's Roads Department faced a difficult situation, as the only feasible detour was through private property. The Fredenburg Road Bridge needed to be replaced, and it needed to be done quickly.
