Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of tools and methods that enable computers to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding language and generating content. This introductory-to-intermediate session will walk environmental professionals through AI 101 and AI 201.

AI 101 will focus on chatbots, such as large language models (LLMs), and will provide attendees with a basic overview of LLMs, how to develop effective prompts, and how to safely integrate AI into everyday workflows. AI 201 will look ahead, exploring established use cases of AI for general and specific organizational activities, including drafting emails, summarizing meetings and conducting extensive research.

Throughout the session, the panel will discuss basic concepts behind LLMs in plain language, common risks and limitations, and simple guardrails for confidential or sensitive information. Attendees will leave with a practical starting point for using AI and LLMs more effectively and efficiently in personal and professional tasks, plus ideas to share with colleagues and leadership.
