My team faced a unique problem—a massive construction project was looming, and our lead site inspection expert was preparing to retire. We needed to find a way to preserve his decades of experience and translate it into a streamlined, repeatable digital workflow. Although he had designed various inspection forms over the years, they were on paper and did not support geolocated photos, which were essential for this project.

To address this, we implemented a solution using Esri’s Survey123 Connect and Dashboard app, integrated with Microsoft’s Power Automate. This allowed inspectors to complete inspections and automatically generate completed forms that would be waiting in their inboxes upon returning to the trailer. We followed an iterative design process, working with experienced and new inspectors to build a user-friendly application. The result was a timesaving, geo-enabled inspection system that created a centralized, easily accessible database of inspection forms and photos—available from both the field and the office.
