What do Vision Zero and the Safe System Approach look like in small communities? For Clinton County, Ohio (population 40,000) B&N developed a Safe Streets Clinton County Plan. The entire planning process, including data analyzation and stakeholder feedback, was built around the Safe System Approach framework. Stakeholders selected speed, distraction, young drivers, and roadway departures as their key issue areas – but instead of identifying solutions for each, cross cutting solutions were developed for Safe Speeds and Roads, Post-Crash Care, Safe Road Users, Safe Vehicles, Equity and Culture. While the Safe System Approach has been discussed at length, few examples of what it looks like at the planning stages are in place, and even fewer in small communities. This presentation will assist agencies with how to structure their vision zero or safety action plans around the Safe System Approach.
