A PFAS Primer: Terminology, Sources, Regulations and Treatment

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of over 5,000 exclusively-anthropogenic emerging contaminants that are quickly garnering increased attention from regulatory agencies, the news media and drinking water customers nationwide. PFAS have been linked to serious negative health outcomes and as such, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has issued a lifetime health advisory (LHA) of 70 ng/L combined for two of the many PFAS (perfluorooctanoate [PFOA] and perfluorooctane sulfonate [PFOS]). US EPA is considering further regulations within the next year.

This presentation will review:

  • The industry-accepted terminology used to refer to PFAS
  • Legacy and ongoing sources of PFAS
  • Current regulations
  • Partially effective conventional and emerging treatment technologies to address PFAS in drinking water and wastewater
