B&N Receives ACEC-KY Top Honor for Road Widening Project

LEXINGTON, Kentucky – B&N recently received the Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Kentucky (ACEC-KY) Engineering Excellence Awards competition for the Turfway Road widening project. Plans produced by B&N saved the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet approximately $10 million in bridge replacement costs and eliminated direct impacts to interstate traffic.

Turfway Road, located in the rapidly expanding city of Florence, passes under the center span of a three span, 10-lane I-71/I-75 overpass with embankments under the flanking spans. Early concepts considered replacing the overpass with a longer structure – a solution that would have had negative impacts on interstate traffic. B&N suggested soil nailing, a method of excavating and retaining soil that allows the progressive excavation of the embankment under the flanking spans while maintaining stability of the embankment.

The final configuration consists of six lanes – two lanes under each span and an eight-foot-wide sidewalk on each side of the road. Previously, Turfway Road consisted of two lanes.

With additional aesthetic improvements including landscaped green spaces, stone-faced retaining walls, reduced overhead utility clutter and stylized traffic signal and street lighting, Turfway Road serves as a welcoming gateway to the community.
