Water Park Wins OPRA Superior Award
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Burgess & Niple-designed Reed Road Water Park in Upper Arlington, Ohio, will receive a Superior Award from the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association (OPRA) as part of the organization’s Annual Awards of Excellence Competition. The award will be presented in February 2006 at OPRA’s Annual Conference in Toledo, Ohio.
The new water park replaces the Hastings Pool complex that was designed by Burgess & Niple in 1961. Features include a wading pool, zero depth entry pool, a deep water facility with a 1-meter diving board, two water slides, spray features, lap lanes, play structures and a lazy river feature.
Opened to the public on June 4, 2005, the water park drew nearly 1,000 visitors per day on weekdays and up to 1,500 per day on the weekends – almost three times previous year’s attendance and more than double the attendance of the two other community pools.
Construction, which began in September 2004, was completed on a very aggressive schedule in order to be ready for the 2005 swim season. Close cooperation among the construction manager, design team and Parks and Recreation staff was essential for on-time completion.
The Reed Road Water Park is the first of the three pool replacements planned by the City of Upper Arlington. Sub-consultants for the project were Counsilman/Hunsaker and Associates, Inc. and Myers-Schmalenberger.
