Home Road Bridge Receives Top Award

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Central Ohio Section of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) recently awarded Burgess & Niple its Project of the Year Award for the Home Road Bridge in Delaware County, Ohio. The award was presented at ASHE’s annual dinner meeting on May 18, 2004.

At 1,145 feet, the Home Road Bridge is the longest span built in Delaware County to date. It features 12-foot-wide lanes for cars and an 11-foot bicycle lane. Because the estimated number of vehicles crossing the bridge today (8,900) is expected to double by 2023, the bridge was designed for easy expansion to a total of four traffic lanes.

The project also includes 1,500 feet of new roadway construction, decorative lighting on the bridge and roadway approaches, and construction of a new bikeway/walkway connecting the City of Columbus Marina on the east side of O’Shaughnessy Reservoir to an existing Concord Township bikeway west of SR 745.

The Home Road Bridge replaced an historic five-span Parker through truss bridge, which was completed in 1925 when the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir was constructed by the City of Columbus. It is the largest single transportation improvement constructed by Delaware County.

ASHE's judging criteria for this award consisted of five categories: Originality; Innovation and Improvement of Existing Techniques; Technical Engineering Application; Complexity; Cost Saving Benefits; and Sensitivity to Environmental Impacts.
