Fifth Street Bridge Wins Second National Award

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Burgess & Niple-designed Fifth Street Bridge in Dayton, Ohio, has been selected to receive its second national design award. The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) chose the project to receive a 2004 Design Award. Earlier this year, the bridge was selected to receive the Portland Cement Association (PCA) Bridge Design Award of Excellence.

The Bridge was one of 14 selected by a panel of jurors, out of approximately 90 entries, to receive this honor. Entrants were required to submit color and digital photographs, as well as a narrative describing the concept of design and outstanding features of the project.

The Fifth Street Bridge over the Great Miami River is a five-span bridge using pre-stressed concrete interior girders and haunched spliced exterior girders.

Opened to traffic in December 2003, the 1,200-foot span currently carries nearly 15,000 vehicles per day, as well as considerable pedestrian traffic from the neighboring Sinclair Community College campus. Stories on the winning projects will be featured in The PCI JOURNAL and a special issue of ASCENT magazine will also feature the winning entries.
