Dayton Bridge Design Receives National Award

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Portland Cement Association (PCA) recently announced that the Burgess & Niple-designed Fifth Street Bridge over the Great Miami River in Dayton, Ohio, will receive a 2004 Bridge Design Award of Excellence. The award is part of PCA’s 2004 Concrete Bridge Awards Competition.

The Fifth Street Bridge is one of nine to receive this distinction out of 78 entries from around the country. The awards were given in recognition of creativity and imagination in the structural, functional, aesthetic and economic design of concrete bridges.

The aesthetically enhanced replacement structure is a five-span bridge utilizing pre-stressed concrete interior girders and haunched spliced exterior girders. The 1,200-foot bridge project included pavement widening, vertical grade adjustments and drainage improvements.

Opened to traffic in December 2003, the Fifth Street Bridge is recognized as a vital transportation link for the downtown Dayton area. It currently carries nearly 15,000 vehicles per day, as well as significant pedestrian traffic from the adjacent Sinclair Community College campus.

The award will be presented at the American Concrete Institute Fall Annual Convention in San Francisco, California, in October 2004.
