Burgess & Niple Receives Outstanding Achievement Award for Alum Creek Water Reclamation Facility

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Burgess & Niple, one of the nation’s leading engineering and design firms, recently received an Outstanding Achievement Award for the Alum Creek Water Reclamation Facility (ACWRF) in Delaware, Ohio, from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Ohio.

The award was presented on February 18, 2003, at the ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards Luncheon held at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium.

The ACWRF was designed to meet the rapidly growing wastewater treatment capacity needs of Delaware County. Following a 64 percent population increase between 1990 and 2000, it became evident that the area’s existing facility, the Olentangy Environmental Control Center’s (OECC), would soon exceed its capacity despite a 300 percent expansion.

The $64 million ACWRF is one of the largest projects ever undertaken by Delaware County. Completed in February 2002, it includes a 30 million gallon-per-day (mgd) raw sewage pumping station, a state-of-the-art 10 mgd wastewater treatment facility, associated influent mains and effluent sewers, and a sewer system maintenance facility.

The facility’s effective use of effluent includes water source heat pumps to heat and cool the administration building and part of the maintenance building. The effluent also is pumped through decorative fountains in the administration building’s main lobby and courtyard.

Aesthetically, the ACWRF features prairie-style, low profile structures with building materials that blend into the surrounding neighborhood. The hillside topography creates a terraced concept concealing open tanks from residential view.
