Two Projects Receive ACEC Awards

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Two Burgess & Niple projects received Honor Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Ohio during the February 22 Engineering Excellence Awards Luncheon in Columbus, Ohio.

Cleveland Innerbelt Study
Burgess & Niple led a multidisciplinary team that conducted a Major Investment Study of Cleveland’s Innerbelt Freeway System for the Ohio Department of Transportation. The team conducted research and technical studies of traffic and travel data, including the verification of area growth projections, which produced an Existing and Future Conditions Report.

More than 100 public meetings were held to obtain ideas for alternatives for routing and construction of the Innerbelt. Taking into account suggestions produced by that public involvement process, and considering other factors such as safety, cost, and the difficulty of construction, B&N’s team produced a consensus recommendation for the reconstruction of the freeway.

The plan was adopted by the Northeast Ohio Area Coordinating Agency in July 2004. B&N currently is leading the environmental and preliminary engineering phase of the project.

The Rio Grande Wastewater Treatment Plant Membrane Bioreactor Process Upgrade
Burgess & Niple designed a new wastewater treatment facility in Lake County, Ohio, for the Rio Grande Subdivision using submerged flat plate membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology. This project marked the first time that MBR technology was adapted for Ohio’s cold-weather climate.

B&N helped the Lake County Utilities Department obtain a research and development grant from the Ohio Water Development Authority, which funded 80 percent of the project cost.

The new plant was installed parallel to the existing one, which was kept on stand-by for a one-year test period. Data collected over the test period not only demonstrated that the new technology worked successfully, but also that it produced less sludge than conventional treatment processes and greatly reduced odors.
