Two B&N Projects Win Top WV ACEC Awards

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The West Virginia American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) presented Burgess & Niple with the top awards in two categories of the Engineering Excellence competition. Corridor D Section 6 received the Gold Award in the Transportation-Highway category and the Parkersburg Utility Board Water and Wastewater Project received the Gold Award in the Water and Wastewater category.

Corridor D
B&N designed and prepared construction plans and related documents for Section 6 of the Appalachian Corridor D Highway for the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT). From transportation to utility infrastructure and environmental services, B&N provided an exceptionally broad range of services for this project, including:

  • Interchange design for West Virginia Route 47 and US 50
  • Interchange design for US 50 and 7th Street
  • Six overpass structures and 2 stream crossing structures
  • A 1,300-linear-foot structure over the Little Kanawha River
  • The relocation of 20,000 linear feet of gas line, 2.6 miles of waterline, and 1.6 miles of sanitary sewer
  • Natural stream mitigation services
  • Two mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls
  • 162 right of way parcels
  • Eleven construction contract plans with construction cost of $99.5 million
  • Lighting for the entire section of roadway
  • Relocation and design of Godbey Fields recreational complex

The primary objective of the Appalachian Corridor D Highway is to stimulate economic development in the Parkersburg/Belpre area. Increased access and mobility will help the area achieve its development potential by attracting new investment and corporate interest. Additionally, the new corridor provides a safer alternative for motorists and reduces heavy traffic volumes.

PUB Water and Wastewater Improvements Project
B&N completed a $9 million Water and Wastewater Improvements Project for the Parkersburg Utility Board (PUB) that provides improved levels of service to the area’s 15,700 customers. Many of the facilities utilized to provide water and wastewater service to area customers were in need of significant repair or replacement. The PUB and B&N launched a major planning effort to identify where improvements were necessary and to assure that improvements would meet the demands of future conditions.

System improvements included:

  • New screens on two of the existing wells
  • Three new water storage tanks
  • Two new water booster stations
  • 66,000 feet of new water main
  • Ten 20-inch water valves
  • 6,700 feet of new sanitary sewer
  • Lining of 27,600 feet of sanitary sewer
