B&N Offers High-Definition Survey Services
Burgess & Niple now offers High-Definition Surveying (HDS). Also known as 3-D scanning, B&N’s HDS equipment allows the quick delivery of high-level detail in a three-dimensional file format.
How does it work? Using a narrow laser to scan targeted objects, HDS equipment collects hundreds of thousands of closely spaced measurements called point clouds. When this high-density data is loaded to a computer, the result is accurate, detail-rich images that can be navigated like a 3-D model – literally bringing projects from the field to the desktop PC.
From this point cloud data, entities can be modeled, vector linework can be created, and points can be extracted. The data can then be exported in manageable file sizes, for use in both AutoCAD and MicroStation CADD platforms
Advantages of HDS
By using HDS scanners B&N has the ability to deliver survey data to clients faster and with a higher level of detail than ever before. Because they can be used from remote points on roadways, the scanners are safer for surveyors in high-traffic areas, and limit the need for lane and road closures.
Another advantage of this equipment is that there is virtually no limit to what can be scanned. Projects completed to date include a dam, military barracks, bridges, highways, an airport runway and a water tank.
HDS in Action
Burgess & Niple has put this technology to the test on numerous surveying projects. In Columbus, Ohio, HDS Laser Scanning technology was used to perform deformation monitoring measurements on the O’Shaughnessy Dam, which was constructed in 1925.
In Bowie, Maryland, the scanning equipment allowed surveyors to collect data on Central Avenue Highway 214, a heavily traveled roadway, without lane closures or putting themselves in harm’s way.
At the United States Coast Guard Air Station’s Opa Locka Airport in Miami, Florida, B&N performed an HDS scan to collect data on runways and aircraft operating areas. The HDS equipment allowed surveyors to collect data without obstructing these sensitive areas. The scan was done at night to minimize the impact on search and rescue operations.
