B&N Team Selected for Cleveland Innerbelt Corridor Megaproject

A team led by Burgess & Niple has been selected by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to design a significant portion of the largest transportation infrastructure program to date in the State of Ohio. Preliminary project cost is estimated at $800 million.

The team – consisting of B&N, URS and other engineering firms – will complete preliminary development and environmental work on the Cleveland Innerbelt Corridor under the second phase of the Cleveland Innerbelt Plan.

The team began work on the two-and-one-half-year contract in August 2004. The contract value is estimated at $37 million. Major components of the contract include

Preliminary development and design of the Innerbelt curve at I-90 and SR2 near Cleveland’s Lakefront. This will include redesign of the curve’s severe geometry to improve safety and operations;

Rehabilitation or replacement of the Central Viaduct Bridge over Cuyahoga River.

Preliminary development, environmental and Stage 1 plans for the remainder of project;

Preliminary development and design of a new connector road from I-71 to Quigley Road to improve truck access to the Cuyahoga Industrial Valley; and

Preliminary development and design of the East 55th Street railroad grade separation.

During the first phase of the Innerbelt project, B&N led the interdisciplinary team responsible for the analysis of the Innerbelt system problems, evaluation of alternatives and development of a strategic plan for the project. Completion of the second phase is scheduled for 2006. Project construction is scheduled to begin in 2006 and could take up to nine years to complete.
