The Main Event

While Lexington, Kentucky residents might be familiar with the major Richmond Road (US Route 25) widening project, it’s likely that few know what happened beneath the surface to make this project possible – the relocation of the community’s primary water transmission main.

The Kentucky American Water Company (KAWC) called on Burgess & Niple for design and services during construction for a $1.6 million water facility relocation that had to be completed before the widening of this heavily traveled road could begin.

B&N provided plans and specifications for this project. Lead designer, Bill Wooton, PE, collected and correlated profile data for the 30-inch water main from original construction plans and utility test excavations done by KAWC and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

A construction administration team from B&N’s Lexington office, led by Jake Stremmel, PE, provided direction for the transfer of three sections of 30-inch diameter concrete water main, totaling 2,400 linear feet. To maintain water service during relocation, a parallel water distribution main was extended and reinforced.

Construction for the road-widening phase of the project currently is underway.
