Modernizing Canton’s Sugar Creek Water Treatment Plant

The Sugar Creek Water Treatment Plant and well field are cornerstones of the City of Canton, Ohio’s public water system, providing water to more than 50,000 residents. Major water treatment plant improvements are helping the City strengthen the efficiency, reliability and resilience of this essential infrastructure.

The plant’s first major renovation since 1962 introduced improvements designed to optimize filter backwashing, reduce power consumption and provide greater system redundancy for future maintenance. The biggest challenge was completing this work while keeping an essential facility operational. Over three years of construction, careful planning, regular collaboration and strategic sequencing helped maintain consistent water output and minimize outages.

Today, these improvements provide lasting benefits for Canton by supporting a more efficient, reliable and resilient water system. The project reflects the City’s continued commitment to protecting public health, responsibly managing water resources and serving its community for years to come.
