When the Clark County-Springfield Transportation Coordinating Committee (CCSTCC) began reassessing the future of Limestone Street, the corridor faced persistent challenges related to traffic safety, vehicle capacity, limited pedestrian infrastructure and underrealized community and economic potential. Recent changes, including the reopening of South High School as a global STEM academy and planned regional transportation investments, created an opportunity to rethink how the corridor could better serve drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and surrounding neighborhoods.
B&N was selected to prepare a preliminary engineering study that addressed long-term safety, capacity and multimodal needs along this four-lane corridor. The study was timed to align with upcoming roadway resurfacing and anticipated improvements to Interstate 70 and its interchange with South Limestone Street, ensuring recommendations were both forward-looking and practical.
B&N’s role included evaluating existing conditions, identifying access management and safety concerns and developing concept-level improvements to support traffic operations, stormwater management and community character. The team examined traffic calming practices, intersection performance and opportunities to improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity while working within existing right-of-way constraints.
