When the Franklin County Engineer's Office sought to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries, B&N served as a subconsultant to provide advanced crash data analysis and geospatial support. The resulting Safety Action Plan establishes a framework for improving safety across the County's transportation network for all users, including people driving, walking and biking, while positioning the County to pursue future federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) implementation funding.
Because much of Franklin County is incorporated within the City of Columbus and surrounding communities, B&N performed a focused analysis of County-maintained roadways to identify safety priorities within the County's jurisdiction. The team evaluated multiple years of crash, roadway and traffic data to better understand risk patterns and support proactive safety decision-making.
The team developed a High Injury Network (HIN) to identify corridors with concentrations of serious crashes, conducted intersection screening using GIS and exposure-based safety metrics and identified Priority County-Maintained Intersections for future improvements. B&N also completed a Roadway Departure Systemic Analysis and applied statistical methods to evaluate relationships between crash occurrence and roadway characteristics. This work supported the development of a predictive High-Risk Network that helps County staff proactively prioritize corridors and intersections for safety investments before severe crashes occur.
This project demonstrates B&N's expertise in systemic safety analysis, crash data analysis, project identification and grant funding positioning. Through advanced GIS tools, predictive analytics and data-driven screening methods, the team helped Franklin County establish a defensible framework for prioritizing transportation safety improvements. The planning process supports local decision-making, strengthens applications for future SS4A implementation funding and advances safety outcomes for all roadway users, including people driving, walking, and biking. The project also reflects B&N's experience supporting public agencies with transportation safety planning that connects technical analysis to practical, community-focused implementation.
