The engineering services for the Piedmont Juvenile Detention Center (PJDC) Energy Improvements Project began with concept-level design assistance during an Investment Grade Audit (IGA), progressing to full construction document preparation and construction administration services.

B&N's initial scope of work included a field investigation of the facility's existing heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and electrical systems, followed by the creation of concept plans outlining the replacement of five rooftop HVAC units, the installation of new propane tanks and associated underground gas piping, the preparation of preliminary Direct Digital Control (DDC) diagrams and the coordination of necessary electrical upgrades to support the new HVAC equipment.

B&N created detailed and fully coordinated construction documents for the contractor to use during the next phase of the project. The final drawings indicated demolition and new work, including disconnection points for ductwork, piping and electrical wiring, as well as the removal and replacement of rooftop units, boiler burners, pumps and exhaust fans. The final construction documents included coordination with the propane vendor, the installation of new DDC controls for HVAC and smoke control systems and the creation of equipment schedules, details and specifications. The supporting electrical drawings included branch circuit layouts, variable frequency drives (VFDs), disconnect switches and power distribution for all new equipment.

Following completion of the design, B&N provided construction administration services, which included reviewing equipment shop drawings, preparing responses to contractor requests for information and conducting periodic site visits to ensure that the detention facility's HVAC system was code-compliant, energy-efficient and operationally reliable.
