B&N partnered with ABM Building Services (ABM) to retrofit the existing, vacant Fauquier High School “Cube” Building in Fauquier County, Virginia, with a new premium efficiency variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat recovery system to prepare the building for student occupancy in the fall of 2019.

The original building system consisted of unit ventilators with hot water heating coils and direct expansion cooling coils. B&N collaborated with an HVAC manufacturer to design custom unit ventilator cabinets retrofitted with Mitsubishi VRF fan coil components and total-enthalpy energy recovery wheels. Using the ASHRAE 62.1 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Method and incorporating bipolar ionization devices into the new HVAC equipment, B&N was able to reduce the code-required outside air intake by 50%, improving the overall energy efficiency of the system.
