The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program offers local agencies a unique opportunity to invest in roadway safety while embedding safety practices into existing systems and processes. This presentation highlights a case study from Pima County, Arizona, where a GIS-driven approach was used to enhance countywide safety planning. The approach includes a focus on automating analysis, integration with existing workflows, and empowering local staff to become safety advocates without requiring deep technical expertise. The session will demonstrate how GIS tools can scale local capacity and institutionalize safety.

This session dives into the playful, unconventional side of cartography, where data meets design experimentation. Through a series of original maps, the presenter shares creative techniques from ASCII-inspired symbology to heatmap “light” simulations and hand-drawn textures plotted with a modified 3D printer. Learn how to push past default settings and embrace the unexpected, using tools like Photoshop, open-source GIS and hardware mods to craft maps that feel tactile, personal and alive. Whether you're a mapmaker, designer or data nerd, this talk is an invitation to color outside the lines and have fun doing it.
