On the road to zero, every traffic fatality counts. A strategic safety plan tailored to a community’s needs is the first step in getting to zero, and countermeasure implementation is the critical final step that prevents future crashes. B&N collaborates with rural communities to develop safe systems starting with planning and ending with implementation. During the How to Make Rural Roads Safe for Everyone poster session, B&N safety experts will share their lessons learned on the road to zero from data collection and analysis to both behavior- and infrastructure-based countermeasures and approaches to implementation. This poster will focus on those lessons learned, including examples from three projects in rural areas completed by B&N: A Local Road Safety Plan in Champaign County, Ohio; Regional Strategic Transportation Safety Plans in Northern Arizona; and a Roadway Departure Study for the West Virginia Division of Highways.
