BRIM™

Built on industry-leading research and expertise, Burgess & Niple’s watermain Break Impacts Model (BRIM™) equips utilities to make investment decisions with confidence. BRIM estimates the consequences of failure (COF) for each pipe in the system using data associated with the pipe and its location in proximity to other features to estimate the financial, social and environmental costs of breaks.

Evaluating Risk

  • BRIM uses a pipe’s diameter and its proximity to roads, waterbodies, buildings, railways and other spatial features to estimate COF.
  • It incorporates the loss of service impact on critical customers and large users.
  • BRIM also monetizes COF, enabling a true benefit-to-cost ratio to be developed for investments, better supporting the rightsizing of replacement budgets to manage pipe risks.
  • Combining BRIM COF scores with water main break predictions gives the utility a comprehensive risk profile for every pipe in the system.

Empowering Utilities

  • BRIM estimates are more precise than traditional 1-5 COF scoring
  • Utilities can confidently invest in the riskiest assets at the right time, providing customers with more reliable and affordable service.
  • Complex, large-data process is automated and seamlessly integrated into the utility’s GIS and databases, saving time and money.
  • Utilities can communicate results through their own GIS or dashboard platforms.
