The multi-use Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park Trail (W&OD) serves as a recreation corridor connecting a series of wayside parks and other trail systems in the Northern Virginia area. The 44-mile-long, 100-foot-wide pedestrian/bicycle/equestrian trail stretches from urban to suburban and rural areas. Burgess & Niple (B&N) has provided design and construction services for nearly the entire length of the W&OD Railroad Regional Park Trail through multiple contracts during the past 15 years. B&N was awarded the Consulting Engineers Council of Virginia’s Engineering Excellence Award for this project.
Services provided by B&N encompass:
The project team developed strategies to enhance the trail’s unique configuration and geographic complexity by using stone dust for the equestrian trail, and employing a utility right-of-way and former railroad bed to create a scenic recreation area without disrupting power and gas lines. The adaptive re-use of the abandoned right-of-way and the coexistence of the trail with existing utilities created a prototype for other abandoned rail systems.
