Burgess & Niple (B&N) was retained by Drexel University to assist with the installation of sensors on the towers of the Brooklyn Bridge located in New York City. These sensors were installed to monitor and measure ambient vibrations in the structure imparted by superimposed live loads such as wind and vehicular traffic. A total of 41 accelerometers were installed on one bridge tower, with a few on the adjacent side and main span trusses to serve the objectives of the seismic investigation.
The installation of the sensors was completed utilizing industrial rope access and adapted rock climbing techniques. Based on a review of available alternatives for access, this methodology was identified as the most feasible and least intrusive method for installing the equipment on this historically significant structure. No maintenance of traffic was required.
