Pusan, South Korea
Burgess & Niple was retained by Dong Ah Construction Company, a major South Korean construction company to provide peer review of a suspension bridge design prepared by a Korean/Japanese design consultant team. The new suspension bridge, with a total length of 2,960 feet, carries a new highway across Kwang-An bay in Pusan, South Korea’s second largest city and a major port. A new law, initiated in Korea following several major structure collapses, required that contractors be responsible for designs, thus necessitating the need for peer review.
B&N, teaming with Steinman Consultants of New York City, performed a complete and independent structural design check of all suspension bridge components including main cables, suspenders, towers, deck, stiffening truss, anchorages, foundations, and other components. The design review also included fatigue, seismic, and wind tunnel test analyses and review. In addition to computational checks, B&N/Steinman also provided a review of the bridge design plans and provided recommendations for revisions and improvements to the design.
