|Project:||PPD Vaccine Laboratory Expansion|
|Client:||Pharmaceutical Product Development (PPD)|
|Partner:||Bay Front Development, LLC|
B&N was designer of record for this fast-track design-build project that converted an industrial pre-engineered building into a laboratory space in less than six months. The design was completed and permit for construction issued by the County of Henrico in six weeks.
The lab was designed for one of PPD’s large pharmaceutical clients who needed to expedite development and production of a new vaccine. Completed one month ahead of schedule and $4 million under budget, the project team designed a lab that can operate without interruptions and handle a high volume of required tests.
Initially, a prototype design was offered as a template for the design team to replicate. Through a series of in-depth meetings with lab users, the design-build team customized plans in order to address their specific needs and enhance productivity.
The team’s overall project approach reduced schedule impacts, maintained costs and avoided excess demolition. Exterior modifications were minimized by using the building’s existing shell. A modular design incorporated into the architectural floor plan expedited construction. A catwalk allowed construction to occur on two levels concurrently. Equipment and materials were selected and designed around off the shelf items to eliminate delays.
