To create safer conditions at railroad crossings throughout the state of Maryland, Burgess & Niple (B&N) provided field inventories and investigations of more than 600 railroad grade crossings. The State Highway Administration’s objective for this study was to obtain an accurate inventory of railroad grade crossings in the state of Maryland.
Additionally, B&N provided the State Highway Administration with recommendations to bring obsolete traffic control devices at crossings into conformance with standards of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). With this information in hand, the various jurisdictions are positioned to upgrade locations as required to improve traffic safety.
Each site was visited, previous AAR inventory forms were updated, and a sketch of each location was prepared for the client.
