Since 1993 Burgess & Niple (B&N) has been performing the bridge shop plan review for INDOT. Previously, INDOT had performed their shop plan reviews in-house. B&N’s role as reviewer has freed INDOT internal resources and has provided INDOT with a timely professional service.
B&N has reviewed shop plans for over 600 bridge contracts. Some of the items that are regularly reviewed are details for steel girders, prestressed concrete beams, bearing pads, and various types of expansion joints.
B&N coordinated with INDOT and industry detailers to develop a “paperless” submittal process. By using current media technology, B&N developed a submission process that enables detailers, fabricators, and reviewers to submit drawings electronically. Compared to the previous method (expensive private couriers or U.S. mail), electronic submittals provide an inexpensive solution at the speed of light. This effort cuts down the overall turnaround time involving a set of shop plans from the detailer through the owner/reviewer and back to the fabricator to start production.
