FORT KNOX, Kentucky – The B&N-designed Infantry Brigade Combat Team Barracks at Fort Knox Army post in Fort Knox, Kentucky recently received the Construction Award of Excellence from Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) Kentuckiana Chapter.
Under a contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, B&N designed the four-building barracks complex to sleep 600 unaccompanied enlisted personnel. Each 60,000 square-foot building is equipped with laundry facilities, three communication rooms, a TV lounge, a mud room with boot washing stations, and two-person living suites. The suites consist of two bedrooms, a kitchen, dinette and bathroom.
Sustainable principles were incorporated into the facility. The quad-shaped design creates a center courtyard with green space and the buildings are heated and cooled using a geothermal HVAC system.
Completed on schedule, the new barracks are ready to meet an infantry brigade scheduled to return from Iraq in 2009. B&N teamed with Messer Construction on this design-build project.
